Finding Strength Beyond the Hunt – GySgt Marco Alires (USMC Ret.)

Since 2017 the Fall has been an emotionally difficult time for me.
I suffered third-degree burns that have taken a harder toll than the simple visual changes. When I came out of my coma, I was physically completely dependent on others for the simplest of tasks. I could barely walk and couldn’t even do a push-up. I was also no longer able to do the job I had as a member of the United States Marine Corps. Not being able to lead Marines or be part of a team anymore was one of the more challenging things that I was not ready for. I am still not ready for. This had often made me question my value.

One thing I have always loved is chasing animals, specifically chasing elk. When Daniel reached out to me and invited me to go chase these amazing animals with a group of guys who have had similar experiences as me in their own lives, it was an easy yes.

During my time out on the mountain I got to do hard things again with guys that I knew would appreciate the grind. We were able to have conversations that would normally not be “appropriate” in most public settings. We would have times where there were vulnerable conversations. We busted each other’s balls, laughed, and overall had a really good time. I saw guys who you could tell were struggling, and seeing guys rally behind those who were was just something awesome to see and be a part of again. Times like this I generally forget about my injuries and it is the closest I come to feeling “normal” again.

I want to say thank you to Daniel, JP, Erica, and everyone at The Wilderness Healing Project for all that you do. You guys truly are doing the Lord’s work. Daniel was correct when he said the animal is just the icing on the cake.

Thank you again and Semper Fidelis.
